Documenting Hong Kong 紀錄香港 is a new documentary film screening program organized, in Fall 2024/25, by MALCS, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) to celebrate and promote the vibrant documentary film culture of Hong Kong. This initiative aims to bring the works of local documentarians across generations to the HKU community and beyond, showcasing the rich, contemporary, and diverse non-fiction narratives of the city.
8 distinctive Hong Kong documentary films, consisting of 2 features and 6 shorts have been carefully selected. These films cover a wide range of topics, diverse creative approaches and documentary aesthetics. Each program and film has been selected for its unique perspective and thematic focus, offering audiences a multifaceted view of Hong Kong’s social and cultural landscape. In an era marked by significant social change and the rapid democratization of technology, documentary films have emerged as a crucial medium for capturing and documenting real-life stories. They serve as powerful tools for giving voice to the marginalized, for creative expression of personal stories, and for fostering a deeper understanding of the world around us, among many other possibilities and creative pursuits.
Through this series, Documenting Hong Kong 紀錄香港 underscores the importance of documentary filmmaking as an art form, a means of social commentary, testimonies for idea exchanges or even advocate for social change. By presenting these films, the series aims to engage and bring together the HKU community and the public in meaningful conversations with the participation of filmmakers, subjects of the films and film scholars. These discussions will delve into the dynamic issues and evolving identity of Hong Kong, highlighting the essential role of documentary cinema in reflecting and shaping societal values.
