Derek Lam majored in English at Cornell University as an undergraduate, and obtained his M.F.A. in Film (Directing) at Columbia University. His Ph.D. (HKU) research situates Hong Kong cinema in a global, comparative context by examining the filmic representation of societal development in terms of form, narrative, ideology, and class factors. He teaches courses on film history, theory, and criticism, with a particular focus on world cinema and film aesthetics.
