This course introduces students to the study of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Sinophone cultures. Sinophone studies refers to the study of Sinitic-language communities around the world that exist at the margin of China and Chineseness. It fruitfully engages with scholarship in China studies, area studies, diaspora studies, and transnational theory. The course will cover key writers, filmmakers, visual artists, and scholars whose works are situated at the intersection of queer theory and Sinophone studies. By the end of the course, students will gain a working familiarity with the field of queer Sinophone studies.
Assessment: 100% coursework.
