This introductory course examines some of the foundational texts, concepts, and arguments within the field of critical theory, with particular focus on the Frankfurt School, the most vibrant benefactor of the critical tradition (Kritik). It is a foundational survey that prepares students for further work in literary, film, and cultural studies. Readings will vary by instructor but will include texts by thinkers directly associated with the Frankfurt School (e.g. Theodor Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Herbert Marcuse, Jürgen Habermas) as well as those who inherited its varied critical projects (e.g. Judith Butler, Angela Davis, Edward Said, Michel Foucault). Readings will include secondary sources and may be supplemented by select literary, visual, or other texts which illuminate particular theories, concepts, or approaches.
