Esther MK Cheung Memorial Prize for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students
Etched in Memories and Hearts
Dr. Esther Cheung had joined the Department since 1999 and served as Chairperson for eleven years. She was known for her dedication to teaching and unwavering efforts to inspire interests in the study of Hong Kong culture. As a prolific poet and essayist, Dr. Cheung was a familiar face in the local cultural scene and her departure was a great loss to many. In 2011, she was awarded Teaching Excellence Award by HKU. Her significant works include monographs Fruit Chan’s Made in Hong Kong (2009) and The Uncanny of the Frame (2013, in Chinese), and edited works Hong Kong Screenscapes: From the New Wave to the Digital Frontier (Eds. Esther Cheung, Gina Marchetti, and Tan See-Kam 2011), In Pursuit of Independent Visions in Hong Kong Cinema (Ed. Esther Cheung, 2010, in Chinese), and In Critical Proximity: The Visual Memories of Stanley Kwan (Ed. Esther Cheung 2007, in Chinese).
In honour of her commitment to academic rigour, CGSC and her family established a memorial prize for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Department. Having nurtured numerous students and pioneered meaningful projects and courses. Dr. Cheung remains a beloved soul of the Department.
