Why Writing Still Matters in the Age of AI

When AI can produce an answer in seconds, does the human process of writing still hold value?

In the latest episode of our MALCS Alumni Series, Three Generations of Humanistic Answers, we speak with Darius Tang (HKU MALCS Class of 2024), currently pursuing an MPhil in Humanities and Creative Writing at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Darius's journey into literature began with a deep interest in popular culture. At HKU MALCS, he developed a more systematic perspective on literary and cultural studies. The training in writing and critical thinking helped him identify his true research focus: Hong Kong—the city he grew up in—and the complex emotions it evokes.

His answer to why writing endures in the AI era:
"Writing is not a privilege reserved for artists and writers. Everyone who is alive has a story—and the right to tell it."

HKU MALCS equips students with cross-linguistic, cross-cultural, and cross-media perspectives, while building the critical frameworks needed to ask meaningful questions and find their own answers.
