What do Pets Mean to Chinese Women? - An Analysis of the Woman-Pet Relationship in China through Representations of Pet Documentaries

2024 | Dissertation

by SUN Wei Ariel

Introduction

This dissertation explores the relationship between women and pets. By analyzing four Chinese pet documentaries, the research tries to understand the role pets play in the lives of Chinese women in the 2020s. The four documentaries are Modern Furry Tale (2021), Animal Clinic (2021), Can’t Leave You (2021) and This Life (2018, 2020, 2021). These documentaries aim to portray a harmonious relationship between humans and animals, in line with Donna Haraway’s concept of companion species. However, the interactions between humans and pets also reveal underlying social issues. For the concept of companion species to be fully realized, challenges such as pet personification, idealizing unconditional love, and women’s participation in the pet economy must be addressed.

Experience at MALCS

The academic journey in MALCS has been a blend of both sweet and challenging moments. The interdisciplinary approaches are more than just theoretical frameworks; they are guiding principles that help me navigate the academic landscape. They serve as a source of inspiration and motivation for the future.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the professors who have supported me with patience, care, and encouragement. My supervisor, Dr. Jason Coe, has provided invaluable guidance on every assignment, essay, creative project, and my dissertation, offering detailed advice that has helped me grow and improve. Dr. Winnie Yee has been a source of warmth and support throughout the entire journey, always showing incredible patience. Dr. Daniel Elam encouraged me to create a creative handout on Taylor Swift and reminded me of the importance of passion and love in the creative process.

It is true that we come together through a shared love and passion for literature and film. It is truly magical how this program continues to nurture and ignite my interest in culture, literature, and film. The memories I’ve made here will shape my past, present, and future.
