I feel honoured and humbled being able to receive a prize like this — a prize that not only reminds me of the very late nights I had spent fervently reading and writing about critical theory over the year, but inspires me to strive for the excellence that the late Dr. Esther Cheung had demonstrated as a teacher and a scholar in my future endeavours. I could not have read and written everything that I have, however, without the support of the lovely friends and fascinating professors I have encountered in this programme. Thank you for the memories, MALCS!

Vaguely I remember Dr. Esther Cheung from one guest lecture that she taught in 2012. She became a more concrete presence as I attended classes given by Dr. Jason Ho, Dr. Fiona Law, and Dr. Winnie Yee. I was told that their meticulous teaching style was inherited from Dr. Cheung. As they taught me how to read, I saw Dr. Cheung again in their eyes. The wisdom passed on over generations continues to bless students of the years to come.

I am grateful to have received the prize. I see this award not only as an encouragement and recognition of my research during the academic journey here but also as a tribute to the spirit of Dr. Esther MK Cheung and the many others who share a passion for studying and exploring Hong Kong culture. Looking back on the reasons I dedicated time to reading and writing here, I find it truly meaningful and a great honor to be acknowledged in this way. Thank you.

This scholarship from late Professor Esther Cheung means much more than a recognition. It is a lifelong reminder to continue her literary legacy and spirit for excellence in the scholarly field and beyond. Being able to stand on the shoulders of academic titans, including professors Esther Yau, Winnie Yee and Derek Lam, I am grateful for all the learning experience and exchanges at the MALCS programme – which is both intellectually rigorous and stimulating. Thank you again, HKU.

Liu Shijie
Full-TimeAcceptance Speech
I was a Postgraduate student for Master of Arts in Literary and Cultural Studies in 2019-2020, with emphasis in feminism and female representations. During the one-year journey at MALCS, I have not only accomplished academic capstone, but also explored and shaped my own identity through cultural exchange. Currently I work in a multinational corporation and focus on the Human Resources sector.
By awarding me the Esther MK Cheung Memorial Prize for Postgraduate Students, you have encouraged me to further pursue the journey of self-exploration, and allow me to have more chances experiencing various cultures and profound thoughts. Thank you again for your generous and thoughtful gift.
