Experience at MALCS
The most important thing I gained from MALCS is a Hong Kong perspective that has reshaped the way I perceive cultural, political, and social issues. Before joining the program, my imagination of Hong Kong was largely influenced by Wong Kar-wai’s films and Cantonese music. Everything became different when I truly sat in class, listened to insights of Hong Kong academics, exchanged ideas with classmates from diverse backgrounds, and walked around the campus and surrounding neighbourhoods. Hong Kong culture and the city’s change have never resonated with me this hard before I studied here. To some extent, the interdisciplinary education provided by MALCS opened up a whole new way of seeing and understanding. I am especially grateful to Dr. Esther Yau, whose mentorship and encouragement throughout my academic journey helped me navigate a challenging time in my life. I was also touched by the kind comments from Dr. Fiona Law, the second examiner of my capstone documentary, which comforted me and made me feel even the most personal expressions can make voices heard.
