Research Assistant, Department of English

Biography

As an RA (Research Assistant), I am working for a project that studies the concept of “poetic justice” in English novels. One of the project’s objectives is to theorize our real-life justice from its literary representations. As I have been researching on utopias since my undergraduate degree, I consider myself lucky to be part of this project that concerns an ideal, and probably more egalitarian world. While many view it as an unrealistic trope, I see the opposite, that utopias are the fundamental source to actualize social change. In fact, not only utopian studies, but literature and philosophy in general have been undervalued for their utility in society. My opinion is that literature and philosophy delve into higher quests in life that other disciplines cannot reach, say, righteousness, diversity, freedom, kindness, love and hope. Without understanding these qualities, we are doomed; even if Elon Musk succeeds to relocate us in Mars. Anyway, besides literature, I love coffee and make latte art in my spare time. I also love golden retriever but do not have one.

Experience at MALCS

I still remember an alumnus from the Orientation Day gave us the advice to “be obsessed”. I was amazed when I found it bears resemblance to a famous quote in Attack on Titan, “誰もが何かに取り憑かれ酔っている” (Everyone has to be drunk on something). The resonance came even stronger when a lecturer told us proudly in a drink gathering that “I can be naturally high without alcohol”. Indeed, there is nothing more precious in life to have something to hold onto, be it a sense of mission or a mere passion. MALCS made literature that “something” so solid to discuss, debate and be drunk on. What is more wonderful is that I met great friends here who connect with me spiritually and share the obsession together.

Words for Fellow MALCS Students and Potential Applicants

I think MALCS has a strong focus on critical theories that challenge our modern industrial society. This gives us a transparent lens to view our current system and challenge dominant cultures. My advice is to read more extensively than lesson materials, then you will find connections among topics in class, and even resonances in the everyday life. My second suggestion is to make friends and chat with classmates as much as possible, because you will find how like-minded you are, and how few they are outside classroom.
