Biography
I am currently working as a freelance independent researcher, tutor, editor, and course developer for post-secondary institutions. I graduated from the Faculty of Arts in 2015, majoring in Comparative Literature and General Linguistics. Before returning to pursue MALCS, I primarily worked as an editor in the publishing industry, focusing on English picture books and children’s publications.
Experience at MALCS
As an alumnus of the department, studying MALCS felt like coming home. I was able to reconnect with familiar teachers and return to a campus that holds fond memories for me. In addition to this familiarity, my experience completing the MALCS programme was both enlightening and refreshing. The courses were diverse, covering a range of classic and contemporary works, from films to literary texts to visual arts, and addressing various cultural issues such as gender dynamics, diaspora, postmodernity, and the Anthropocene. These issues connected deeply to our identities and our roles in society.
The focused research work for the different courses and my dissertation was particularly rewarding for they allowed me to explore topics that had long been interesting me and to develop my own ideas. The discussions and interactions with both teachers and peers also enhanced my experience as I could know about works that I had not been familiar with and share my ideas and viewpoints freely with them.
On a practical level, completing a master’s degree has opened up new career opportunities for me. Yet, more importantly, my time in MALCS reminded me of the significance of questioning and exploring alternative ways of understanding the world, which has shaped my personal growth.
