Ms. LI Xinyi Celine
Intern at Art Basel VIP Team
Reflection
If you are wondering whether a 5.5 month internship is worth it, the answer is a firm yes. My time with the VIP Team at Art Basel Hong Kong 2026 was not just a line on my CV. It was a real, immersive learning experience that changed how I see the art world, the city, and my place in both. Hong Kong itself is an incredible place to learn about the arts. During these months, I got to know the museums, galleries, independent art spaces, and NGOs. The city’s energy, its mix of global and local, and its role as Asia’s art hub made every day feel like a new discovery.
... the most meaningful part of this internship was what I learned from my line manager. She didn’t just assign tasks, but genuinely invested in my growth. She taught me that an internship is not only about completing duties, but about using the time to connect with industry professionals and build a personal network, because those are the people who can help you in the future.
But the most meaningful part of this internship was what I learned from my line manager. She didn’t just assign tasks, but genuinely invested in my growth. She taught me that an internship is not only about completing duties, but about using the time to connect with industry professionals and build a personal network, because those are the people who can help you in the future. She often reminded me that communication and attitude can sometimes matter more than how “smart” you are, and that this was the perfect chance to learn how those soft skills can actually build a career. Those words stuck with me. I started paying more attention to how I showed up every day: not just being efficient, but being present, respectful, and willing to learn from everyone around me. And because the internship lasted five months, I wasn’t just a visitor but became part of the team’s rhythm. My colleagues trusted me with real responsibilities, and that trust pushed me to grow.
So if you are a MALCS student considering this opportunity, please take it, don’t let the length scare you. Five and a half months sounds long, but it flies by, and what you gain is far more than a line on your CV. You gain confidence, clarity, mentors who care, and a network of people who might just open doors for you later. You get to live in one of the most dynamic cities in the world, surrounded by art and culture every single day. And you walk away knowing, not just hoping, that you belong in this industry.
